Since its inception in 1968, the Akan Ainu Culture Preservation Society has put emphasis on activities designed to transmit and preserve Ainu old-style dancing. At the same time, it has contributed to the promotion and dissemination of Ainu culture by introducing Ainu culture to the rest of the world through the production of yukar dramas and the performances at the UNESCO Japan Culture Festival in Paris, among other activities. In 1984, the Ainu old-style dancing that the Society has helped hand down and preserve was designated a significant intangible folk cultural asset by the Japanese Government.
