Asahikawa Ainu Language School

Established in 1987, Asahikawa Ainu Language School was the second school built in Hokkaido for the purpose of the transmission, preservation and development of Ainu folklore. They have been seeking understanding from the local people for 14 years, and currently elementary and junior high school students along with ordinary people attend this school. Meanwhile, they have participated in Ainu Culture Festivals since its establishment, performing "Drama in Ainu," and also hosted the "Asahikawa Ainu Culture Festival" in Asahikawa, performing "Drama in Ainu" with yukar as the theme.Their bulletins, "Ci Sanke Sonko" (Information We Transmit), are read regularly by many people including citizens. Thus their introduction, transmission and preservation of Ainu tangible and intangible culture greatly contribute to the dissemination of Ainu culture.

1989 Appears in "Ainu Folk Culture Festival" hosted by the Ainu Association of Hokkaido.
1996 Attends Japan Society of Ethnology meeting (Saga Pref.).
1997 Attends American Anthropological Association meeting (Washington).
1998 Visits Taiwan for cultural exchanges with indigenous people.
1999 Performs in "Asahikawa Elementary and Junior HighSchool Ainu Folk Musical Instrument Concert" hosted by Asahikawa Board of Education.

 

* Asahikawa Ainu Language School has conducted many other academic research projects, survey reports, and has participated in various ceremonies, rituals and public performances.
