Giichi Nomura

He has contributed greatly to the empowerment of the Ainu and the promotion and development of the Ainu culture as the Chairman of the Ainu association of Hokkaido for 32 years. During his tenure, he has participated in the General Assembly of the ILO, the United Nations and other international organizations. In 1992, he was invited to and delivered a speech as a representative of indigenous peoples at the Opening Ceremony of the International Year of the World's Indigenous People, which was held at the United Nations Headquarters. Through such efforts, he has contributed to the improvement of the status of indigenous peoples around the world, including the Ainu.
Since 1978, he had made his utmost efforts to enact the New Ainu Law and his activities bore fruit in 1997 with the enactment of the Law for the Promotion of Ainu Culture and for the Dissemination and Advocacy for the Traditions of the Ainu and Ainu culture.
He has also contributed widely to the socioeconomic and cultural development of the Ainu, including the Transmission and preservation of the Ainu culture, as the President of the Association for the Transmisson and Maintenance of Ainu Intangible Culture and the President of the Hokkaido Ainu Old-Style Dancing Preservation Society.
