Kushiro Ainu Mingei Kigyokumiai (Kushiro Ainu Folk Art Business Union)

People with considerable experience in Ainu traditional wood carving handed down in the Kushiro area took a leading part in the establishment of the Kushiro Ainu Folk Art Business Union in 1990 to train skilled workers in Ainu folk art. The Union has strived to transmit and preserve traditional expertise including wood carving and embroidery handed down in the Kushiro area, largely contributing to the dissemination and enlightenment of Ainu culture.Eleven years have passed since the Ainu collaboratively and independently started this union, during which they created numerous excellent works and received an award. They have contributed to the understanding, transmission and development of Ainu traditional culture and produced major achievements by working to restore crafts and the Ainu world of belief from ancient times through the creation of Ainu folk art, always cherishing the Ainu spirit.

1991 Receives Governor's Award at Ainu Craft Contest (tonkori five-stringed instrument)
1992 Receives First Prize at Ainu Craft Contest (general work)
1995 Builds a number of replicas of "itaomacip," a traditional Ainu sea boat Interviewed for "The Ainu, Photo and Painting Corpus" published by Nihon Tosho Center
