Mutsuko Nakamoto

She acquired the Ainu language and culture under her parents, whose mother tongue was Ainu.
In 1974, she, along with Ainu elders in Chitose, initiated activities to hand down Ainu culture at home. From 1978, she learned ideas of Ainu and numerous Kamuy-yukar under the late Nabe Shirasawa. She and her mentor Nabe Shirasawa jointly played Kamuy-yukar at the National Theater in 2002.
She also participated in the establishment of the Chitose Ainu Language Class and has striven to promote the Ainu language and culture as the President of the Operation Committee.
This year, she received the Eiji Yoshikawa Literary Award for her many years of achievements. Presently, she continues to contribute greatly to the dissemination, transmission and enlightenment of Ainu culture by actively paying visits to elementary and junior high schools in neighboring municipalities, among other activities.
