Sapporo Ainu Language Class

Sapporo Ainu Language Class was inaugurated as Sapporo Branch's individual Ainu Language Class uekarupa (uekarupan: everyone assembles) in 1979 to restore the Ainu language as proof of their existence, based on their belief that language is an ethnic spirit. Since its inauguration, they have continued to hold learning sessions on the Ainu language with the participation of Ainu people and many other citizens. Since 1990 when Nabe Shirasawa was invited to act as an instructor, Chitose dialect classes have been conducted, and based on the recording of these classes, the "Sapporo Ainu Language Class Transcript" (Nos. 1 and 2) has been published since 1993. Currently, classes to inherit the ethnic spirit are held for beginners' and intermediate Ainu language courses, in which they not only learn Ainu language conversation, but also work on the study of Ainu names of wild flowers and medicinal herbs, significantly contributing to the introduction, transmission and preservation of Ainu culture.
