Shizunai Folk Culture Preservation Society

Winner of the 3rd Ainu Cultural Promotion Award (Organization)

Shizunai Folk Culture Preservation Society

(Important intangible folk cultural property)

The Society was first established as the Shizunai Intangible Culture Preservation Society in April 1961 with the aim of "correct transmission and preservation of traditional Ainu culture and activities which are not tourism oriented." After overcoming stagnation and other difficulties due to the social circumstances, its name was changed to the Shizunai Folk Culture Preservation Society in September 1973 to establish (strengthen) its position and further promote transmission and preservation activities. Today the Society is strongly supported and highly evaluated by the Ainu and many other people because of its positive attitude. Every year, it participates in the Folk Performing Art Festival of the Hokkaido Art Festival, Town Art Festival, Hokkaido Citizens' District Art Festival , Central Hokkaido Art Festival , Mobile Art Festival of the Agency for Cultural Affairs and other events, presenting genuine traditional Ainu dancing from the Shizunai region.
