Minoru Kawakami

Minoru Kawakami has been engaging in wood carving since 1943 in efforts to transmit and develop expertise in Ainu crafts. In addition, after being commissioned to serve as a technical instructor in woodworking by the government and other public agencies, he has been instructing students for many years, producing excellent results in the creation of more jobs in the local Ainu woodworking industry. Ainu crafts created by him that are exhibited in museums in Hokkaido and other parts of Japan, as well as his technical instruction in woodworking, are highly valued. Kawakami also dedicates himself to the instruction and transmission of Ainu ceremonies and rituals. His activities in various fields have substantially contributed to the promotion of Ainu culture.

1989 Assumes the post of Supervisor at the Ainu Association of Hokkaido
1996 Assumes Directorship of the Ainu Association of Hokkaido
